Stay Forever Vigilant
After 25 years of writing the boat smart column coupled with my many years as a Coast Guard rescue responder, I’m absolutely convinced that, in time, most boaters will die on the water. That is, unless they stay forever vigilant. Let the stats tell their own wayward story ...

A Good Thriller Novel for Sailors

Those of us who sail in northern climes tend to read more in the winter when our boats are on the hard - and what better to read than books involving sailing? If you enjoy mystery novels and thrillers, you'll like "Circle of Bones" by Christine Kling (a liveaboard sailor-writer), which I just finished reading. It got me through a few cold winter nights while needing a Caribbean fix, with many good scenes aboard boats and a plot intricate enough for the most discriminating reader. Check it out!

Cold Weather Sailing

Are you sailing in an area of cold water or cold air? In both cases, the cold creates special hazards - even if don't expect to get wet. The Coast Guard Auxiliary recently issued a bulletin listing steps all boaters should take to ensure they stay safe on the water when it's cold. Check this list to see if you might be overlooking something.

Sailing Game Apps?

Tall Ships Age of Sail

As part of my reviewing of apps created for sailors, I've recently started looking at sailing games. To be honest, I haven't been very enthralled by any so far, but I'll keep checking them out! The app Tall Ships Age of Sail has some interesting historical aspects and good physics as your maneuver your tall ship to fire your cannon at attacking ships. And Sailboat Championship PRO does a good job of representing tacks and gybes on different points of sail as you race different courses, but whether either will ultimately satisfy your gaming self probably depends more on your personality as a gamer than on your interest in sailing. I find another racing game, 3D Sailing Simulator Regatta, more fun and closer to the racing experience. And Little Sailor is better still - a realistic simulation and racing game. What do you think? Have you found a great sailing-oriented game app for your Apple or Android device? Please post a comment if so and I'll check it out!

16 and Solo - Laura Dekker Sails Around The World

A year after her journey began, teenager Laura Dekker has achieved her goal of sailing solo around the world. Arriving in St Maarten this weekend at 16 years and 123 days of age, the Dutch girl cut six months off the unofficial record set in 2010 by Australian teenager Jessica Watson, who completed her non-stop voyage around the world just days away from her 17th birthday.

Crazy French Twins Leave the Canaries Behind

Our "good-kind-of-crazy dudes," Emmanuel and Maximilien Berque, spent three months hanging around the Canaries - renewing old friendships, making new ones, and getting very fit. They had always intended to stay around until the time of year when the weather on their sailing route to Barbados was likely to be kind, but I was a little surprised when they announced

Around the World Sailing Record

Big, Big, Big news! The world's largest sailing trimaran has sailed around the planet to achieve the most sought after of ocean records - the Jules Verne Trophy. Once again, history has been made, and once again the world record* is back into the hands of the Peyron sailing dynasty. Under the command of Loick Peyron (brother of Bruno, who made the same record in 1994, 2002, and 2005), and through the skill and determination of a very talented crew including Brian Thompson (who earned the record with Steve Fossett in 2004), Banque Populaire V has conquered the world, and sailed non-stop around the globe in a total time of 45 days, 13 hours, 42 minutes and 53 seconds for a new world sailing record*.
